Canada does not significantly increase the number of immigrants it intends to welcome this year, with 300,000 newcomers in 2017, said today the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, John McCallum.

In fact, this threshold is the same as that one expects to reach in 2016, the acceptable year of Syrian refugees.

From 2011 to 2015, Canada hosted an average of 260,000 immigrants per year.

The 2017 levels plan represents a thoughtful and responsible approach that takes into account the need for Canada to welcome more immigrants, while balancing fiscal responsibility.

the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, John McCallum said in a statement
Of the 300 000 new people who come to live in Canada this year, 40,000 will be refugees and 84 000 will be admitted under the family reunification program.

Far from the Barton Report recommendations

This number of 300,000 is well below the 450,000 immigrants per year recommended by the Advisory Council on economic growth, in a report published two weeks ago.

The committee, set up there is almost a year and chaired by Dominic Barton, aimed to prepare a long-term growth strategy of the Canadian economy.

In the report, the Minister McCallum, said considering the figure of 450,000 as "huge". He said today that he was a target.

"Immigration plays an important role in maintaining Canada's competitiveness in the global economy", while compensating the aging population, said Minister McCallum
