a question about stock ROM not unbricking a device

hello,

i've recently purchased a cheap mt6580 based phone from a local retailer. the device had touch screen issues, so i've contacted the retailer about that. they sent me a "firmware upgrade" (ROM) to use with SP flash tool 5.x and some horribly written instructions in semi-english / chinese, saying that this upgrade supposedly fixes the issue.

i've followed the instructions exactly and performed the so called "firmware upgrade" action in SP flash tool, but the device screen after that become black with some, brief, animated vertical lines from time to time, no sound and the fast-boot screen not accessible!

i've contacted the retailer again and said that this action bricked the phone (the person who i was speaking to was quite frankly not very technical), but they said that this is the first time someone reported a black screen after a "firmware upgrade". then i requested the original software that the device came with and i was provided with that...

after flashing the original ROM the black screen remained and i think this device is in a bit of a checkmate situation.
now sadly, i'm *betting* that they won't even accept it back, even if they suggested the software intervention that broke it.

has anyone experienced something like these vertical lines and the black screen and is there a way to fix the mess, given flashing both of these supposedly official ROMs doesn't bring the device back to life?
